Honestly, I know there’s a lot of discourse around Marie Kondo right now but I just want to say one thing that I haven’t seen anyone else really point out yet, but which I find really telling. Which is that there are like 500 hoarding/tidying up shows on TV, and they ALL focus on trying to get the person to dispose of as large a volume of stuff as possible (there’s one show on Netflix where the host, a white american woman, literally demands each family get rid of 70% of their stuff)
Marie Kondo’s show is actually the only one I have seen where she doesn’t focus on getting rid of as much as possible, and instead focuses on what they want to keep and how to appreciate the things they enjoy more. And if they want to hang onto useless stuff or don’t want to get rid of anything, that’s fine too? She just shows them how to organise it better.
And yet she’s the one people are throwing a fit over and saying she’s telling people to throw away all of their belongings when she literally never does that. But it’s not even just that she never does that, but that so many other shows do exactly that, and these people aren’t taking an issue with those?? Why not, because the hosts are all white and american too?? Like…. the racism and xenophobia jumped out!
I feel like in a way “serial killers are geniuses” is just part of police propaganda because it sounds way better than “we are fucking lazy and a lot of serial killers know that and target people who we don’t care about because of racism and classism”.
More often than not, the killers’ “genius” is far far FAR outweighed by police incompetence and indifference.
I always think of the green River killer who targeted sex workers cos he knew no one would care and he was basically correct. “I thought I could kill as many as I want and no one would notice” and they didn’t care til he started targeting non sex workers. That’s not genius that’s just society hating SWs yet again
I can not stress this enough, former representative Dave Richert made his political career on “catching the Green River Killer” but he actually obstructed the investigation for 20 years because he refused to investigate the white killer and instead went after innocent Black men.
to be clear, anger about the british taking prized jewels from punjab and then refusing to give them back all these years later isn’t JUST about the damn jewels.
egyptian activists lobbying for ancient artifacts to be returned to egypt from france and all other stretches of the world isn’t just about the sentiment.
those things were taken forcibly from a people in a dehumanizing way, and a refusal to return them reinforces the idea that those who colonized still hold some form of power over those who they colonized. they are pieces of history that were taken with little to no regard of the people whose history they represented
